DOD: 17 Oct 1896

MRS. ELIZABETH COSSITT

Mrs. Elizabeth Cossitt, widow of Dr. H. De La Cossitt, died at her home in West Salem township, Saturday, October 17, 15 noon, aged 65 years, 7 months and 16 days.

She was born in Salem township, March 1, 1831, where the early part of her life was spent. Her parents were William and Margaret McClimans, she being the eldest. Her mother died when she was six years old. She was married to Dr. H. De La Cossitt, July 22, 1858, and resided in West Salem continuously. Her parents were Seceders and she received a Christian training, which she followed conscientiously throughout life, being a member of the United Presbyterian church of Greenville, for almost 50 years, where she was found every Sabbath morning when it was possible.

Mrs. Cossitt was a friend of higher education, sacrificing many pleasures and privileges to prepare those following her for a successful battle in life. Loving, kind and self-sacrificing, she cared for her children only as a Christian mother could, and always upheld the advantages of a Christian life. As a neighbor she was always kind and ready to relieve distress.

After a painful illness of seven months continuance, suffering patiently, she died as she had lived, in a firm reliance on Jesus Christ as her Savior. The church has lost a worth member, a loving mother and a charitable woman, the family and community have sustained an inestimable loss.

Funeral services were held Monday, at 2 o’clock at the house with Rev. M. Wilson, of Mercer, officiating, (her church being without a pastor). Services were short and appropriate during which were sung her favorite Psalms 130 and 23.

Those left to mourn are: A brother William McClimans, a sister, Mrs. Henry Miller, of this place; six children, Dr. Henry De La Cossitt and Mrs. J. A. Doyle, of Homestead; William Epaphroditus Cossitt, of this place; Dr. Duran Shepard Cossitt, Conneaut, Ohio; Dr. Fred Silas Cossitt and Carrie Julia Cossitt, of this place, and three grandchildren.
