NATHANIEL ECKLES
Died in this place on the 6th inst., Mr. Nathaniel Eckles aged about 80 years.
The
deceased was born in Westmoreland County on June 29, 1797. He left his
native county in early life and found his way down the Ohio River to
Cincinnati, where he met Capt. Peck, one of the early land jobbers of
Crawford Co., with whom he engaged and came to Crawford County in the
year 1824. In the surveying of the lands of the above-named party, he
became acquainted with every part of the county. In the spring of 1846,
he came to this place, and has been a resident here since that time.
The greater portion of his time spent here was in the employ of the
Canal Company having charge of several locks on this division. At
the time the canal was abandoned the Company presented him with the
house and lot which he occupied, as a reward for his faithful services.
For many years he has served the Borough as Constable and Collector of
Taxes in which capacity he had the confidence of e very one. He united
with the Presbyterian Church many years ago and remained a consistent
member to the time of his death.
