A Rousing Demonstration Greenville did herself proud, Wednesday and gave her soldier boys godspeed. All
day Tuesday citizens were busy decorating their stores or homes and the
town presented a fine appearance. Shortly after one o’clock the line of
march was formed and one of the finest parades ever seen in Greenville
began to move, passing in the following order: 15th Regiment band. John C. Dickey Post, G. A. R. escorting the guardsmen. Company K, Greenville, Impromptu fife and drum corps. Company G, Sharon. Nearly 1,000 pupils, public schools. The
procession came down Main Street to the Bessemer railroad and counter
marched. The school pupils halted and stood in open order, and as the
military - organizations marched through they were given a salute by
nearly a thousand little flags. The public school division was a fine
feature of the parade and the little drummer boys, especially, were
right in their element.
As the line passed along the boys
cheered heartily. The applause was given to the Sharon boys as readily
as to Greenville’s boys in blue, and the old soldiers were cheered to
the echo. The impromptu martial band of Fifers Laird and Bowers and
Drummer Bean, made a great hit. Engine 30, which pulled
the special bearing the boys from town, was very nicely decorated,
Engineer Fred Gilson and Fireman Oliver Christy doing the work. A very
large photograph of the president filled the front of the head light.
As the train pulled out the boys were cheered loudly by the crowd which
wished them godspeed and a quick return.
